Before graduation, Ximena and her boyfriend Preston agreed on a quiet seaside town. A week out, "best friend" Blair Hayes pushed an Arizona–Utah road-movie route. Ximena canceled seaside hotels and replanned everything. On departure day Blair already held the passenger seat; carsick Ximena sat in back. At a rest stop she got out for medicine, and the car left. Preston refused to turn around to get her. Ximena stopped chasing, flew to Porto Cielo, and built a solo slow-travel life by the sea. Preston came begging; Blair called her a burden—and later admitted she'd seen Ximena get out and stayed silent on purpose. Half a year later Ximena was standing on her own.
