Princess Cassia Vale is forced into a peace marriage after twenty years of war. On her wedding day, her own brother launches a surprise invasion, murders the northern peace heir, brands Cassia a traitor, and chains her burning bridal body to the front of a siege tower as a human shield. Her blood awakens Kaor, an ancient red dragon buried beneath the enemy wall. Cassia escapes the flames, frees the prisoners both kingdoms planned to sacrifice, and forms the Ash Legion, an army loyal to no crown. Beside her stands Rhys Draven, the enemy commander who refused to shoot her and lost his rank for it. Together they must conquer seven war fortresses, free dragons enslaved by magical War Crowns, and expose the royal families that profit from endless conflict. Every dragon Cassia frees burns years from her life, while Rhys hides a devastating truth: his father forged the first dragon chains. As the war expands across burning ports, frozen retreats, dragon fleets, and a final bone-dragon apocalypse, Cassia must prove she can build a free alliance without becoming another ruler who commands through blood.
