Kicked out by a husband who shamed her for her weight, Clara has just thirty dollars left. Desperate for a place to stay, she answers an ad for a stepmother—and ends up married to U.S. Vice President Alexander. As she earns the trust of his son, a kidnapping survivor, their care helps her rebuild the confidence her ex destroyed. When her past returns to humiliate her, Clara is no longer the woman who quietly took it. And the marriage that began as a contract will take her all the way to the White House.
